Day 2 No Power

December 27, 2012
by

We have just survived the second day with no electricity, and thank God for cell phones and I pads or I would truly be adrift. Clay has been at work both days, so I am doing the Laura Ingalls thing, keeping the hearth burning brightly, burying food in snow banks, boiling water to clean us and wash dishes and cooking hree meals a day. Pretty soon I may be chopping wood and sewing my own clothes. The chopping wood thing would come in handy as we have about 2-3 days worth of firewood and the Entergy phone call tonight said it may be Tuesday until we have power. I did see one energy truck today, but they seemed to be passing through. Our neighborhood is a symphony of chainsaws and generators. I have emptied the refrigerator into ice cests packed with snow, and we are eating what defrosts from the freezer.
Since I am the candle queen, we have tons of soft light all over the house. The kitchen registered at 53 this morning, so my guess is the bedroom is closer to 45–great sleeping temperature, but hard to get out of bed. Many friends and neighbors have moved to hotels but with 4 dogs, that isn’t much of an option. We are actually having a nice time, playing games, listening to music and reading- i am on book 3.
I did go out and survey the yard and neighborhood and there are a ton of damaged plants. Big hollies, dogwoods, crape myrtles and of course pine trees all have broken branches. We have had very little thawing or melting of snow on the north side of the house, so there isn.’t much that can be done yet, but there will be a lot to do across the state, and they sat we potentially have more coming. So much for a vacation, but I guess I am saving money by missing the after Christmas sales.

Sounds almost romantic. Bet there’s a baby boom 9 months from now.

Stay warm and safe, Janet. Good that you have a sense of humor. maybe even a little romance, with the candles and wine glasses I see in your pictures.
Have a happy and safe New Year, health and happiness throughout all of 2013.
Hilde Simmons, one of your GC MGs.
