Edinburgh Castle and exploring

July 2, 2014

Our goal was to be at Edinburgh Castle by 9:15 to beat the crowds and the castle guard display. They. Normally don’t do a changing of the guard here, except for when the Queen is in town. Since she is, the guards were on hand. We arrived and got in the line for our turn. During our wait, we learned more history from our guide Alan.

They are setting up stadium seating for upcoming concerts. Can you imagine sitting at a concert with a castle as the backdrop.

It was quite a hike up to the castle, but the views of the city were incredible.

The castle is very well preserved and there is one section that was converted to a veterans memorial, and the crown jewels are housed in another section. No pictures were allowed in those areas. But we did see the armor room and a few of the public areas.

The castle willbe closed tomorrow for the Queen’s visit. Her advanced team was there measuring and planning their displays for tomorrow. We did get to see a changing of the guard.

Those guarding the door cannot speak, but we did see some others who were willing to chat.

We were set loose to explore at our leisure and then had the rest of the day free.

Edinburgh is a large city with loads of statues and ornate buildings. It is known as Athens in the north.

There are also a lot of pubs. I spent the afternoon with my friend Debbie from London who came to visit us. She lived in Edinburgh for 8 years, so she had the inside track. We walked over 4 miles again today, much of it up hills and stairs! It was overcast and cool, but no rain!

Tomorrow is our last official day in Scotland before we head to the airport Friday. We do the botanical garden and a private garden.
