Community gardening

Community gardening has gotten extremely popular all across Arkansas. There are numerous choices here in Pulaski county, but many smaller communities are offering gardeners a chance to garden together, learn from one another, and grow a sense of community along with some tasty vegetables. From schools, to churches, to open lots, community gardens are an excellent way to get people excited about gardening. Today I drove to Van Buren county and went with their county agent Danny to Shirley, Arkansas to meet with two excited individuals who are eager to get a garden started. shirley community garden planning jan (3) Their original concept is to grow vegetables with some help from volunteers, and then give them to people in the community who need them. Many of the local churches, along with the Master Gardeners are eager to help. Today we laid the groundwork. Now they need to start clearing the pasture, level things out and plan. shirley community garden planning jan (5)

Grass is always a major weed problem in vegetable and flower beds, so great planning does help.

Then it was a beautiful drive home. The mild, sunny days may be heading into rain tomorrow. I did see winter jasmine in bloom today as I drove home. mystery plant a jan5.15

Tomorrow I will be in Hot Springs for the annual Green Industry (AGIA) and the Arkansas Turf Grass Association meeting. I speak to both–one at 10, and the other at 2. Then I head to Garvan to tape TV. A full day for sure.

Here are some mystery challenge plants for the week: Since it is winter, I am giving you tropical plants I took pictures of in Panama.
