Garvan and an end to an era

Today was the last of the Carson/Byers workshops at Garvan Gardens, since Bob is leaving for his new job in Ft. Worth at the Botanical Gardens. succulent workshop garvan apr.15 (6)It was a sad day for me and the gardens, but it was a great workshop on succulents. Participants learned how to grow them, choose them, design with them, make a living wreath, dish garden, topiary and more. Then they actually made a topiary to take home. It was an educational and fun day, but also a bit messy towards the end. succulent workshop garvan apr.15 (26)

After the workshop, from 4-6:30 was a going away reception for Bob. bob byers going away reception apr.15 (1)

There were many not so dry eyes, before it was all said and done. For me Bob Byers and Garvan Gardens were synonymous. I have been doing workshops with Bob since before the gardens were officially Garvan Gardens, so it is going to be hard to start doing them solo. Bob is leaving behind a great legacy. He has devoted over 20 years of his life making Garvan Gardens what it is today, and he will be missed by many, myself included. I presented him with a lifetime Arkansas MG name badge and the 2015 Honored Friend of Master Gardener plaque bob byers going away reception apr.15 (4)

I also saw Lelia back off to Mississippi after her presentation and lunch, and she actually made it home before I did. It rained like cats and dogs my whole trip home, but I hope she had an easier time of it. I am also happy to say we survived eating the poke salat! poke salat.15 (1)

It has been a busy three days, with a lot of laughter and a few tears.
