Wednesday in New Orleans

I heard that we got a splash of rain in Little Rock, hurrah! We have had almost a daily shower here in New Orleans and surprisingly the weather has not been abysmal.  We had a great breakfast across from our hotel this morning before heading out to the New Orleans Botanical Garden. It is amazing how they have recovered from almost total devastation 10 years ago, to a wonderful botanical garden today.  new orleans botanical garden (3) new orleans botanical garden (21) new orleans botanical garden (23) new orleans botanical garden (13)  There were wonderful tropical collections, perennials, annuals and more. The live oaks, crape myrtles and native oaks survived the flooding better than most plants.  We saw a huge diversity in the ginger family here and they were all in peak bloom. gingers no.aug (13) gingers no.aug (9) gingers no.aug (6) gingers no.aug (1) They also have great statuary throughout the gardens with tropical and semi-tropical plants galore.  I have a whole range of plants for mystery plant challenges. new orleans botanical garden (2) new orleans botanical garden (1) crinum lily aug (1) cestrum aug.15. brugmansia double yellow.aug.

They also had a large vegetable garden with unique fruits and vegetables along with traditional fare. malabar spinach.aug.153 new orleans botanical garden (7) new orleans botanical garden (5)

We got back in time to go to our consumer horticulture working group meeting where we made plans for the upcoming year.   We had a late lunch at the Central Market with a shared muffaletta – a first for all but me.  muffaletta.aug.151 muffaletta.aug.152 muffaletta.aug.153

We explored the farmers market and found a “French” macaroon store so we bought some to take home.  macaroon store (1)

Several of our state coordinators also have met to discuss what works and what doesn’t in our states. The networking at these events is invaluable.

Tonight after another rain storm, four of us walked down to the French Market for a wonderful dinner at NOLA’s.  nola dinner.aug (2) nola dinner.aug (3) nola nola dinner nola dinner2.We had a wonderful meal and not a bad component, but I think the watermelon, tomato, feta salad was my favorite. We all shared.  We have not had a bad meal, and thankfully we have been walking a lot–today over 6 miles, so that will help with all the food.  We have another 1 1/2 days of the conference, so more to follow.  It has been a good day.
