We went exploring this morning before leaving Kansas City.  Our first stop was the most unique.  We were in an orchid cave.  You had to have some knowledge of where you were going, or you would NEVER have found it. Birds Botanicals is in the middle of a cave–underground!  orchid cave birds botanicals kc (3) orchid cave birds botanicals kc (4) orchid cave birds botanicals kc (6) orchid cave birds botanicals kc (9)We met the owner, his daughter and his dog Kahlua!orchid cave birds botanicals kc (7) orchid cave birds botanicals kc (12) orchid cave birds botanicals kc (33) Lighting was unique, so my pictures aren’t great, but definitely unique.  We saw so many different species of orchids, staghorn ferns, carnivorous plants and unusual plants.  They sell at local farmers markets and trade shows across the mid west. I am trying to get them to be a vendor at our state conferences!

Then we drove back up to sunlight and drove to Powells Gardens.  The buildings were designed by E. Fay Jones.  They were well maintained with some unique plantings, and one of the largest water garden features in the mid-west. celosia and cuphea kc.15 powells garden kc (4) powells garden kc (5) powells garden kc (7) powells garden kc (8) powells garden kc (20) powells garden kc (32) powells garden kc (34) powells garden kc (46) powells garden kc (50) powells garden kc (51)

Then we loaded up and rode into Council Bluffs, Iowa.  We registered for the conference.  When we came out, the skies were black, it was pouring rain and lightening was shooting down.  We got checked into our hotels and met up with others who had made their way north.  Then we went to a Taste of the mid-west and got to see others from around the country and see the trade show.
