Garden Tour Planning

July 14, 2016

We were a bit worried about the weather this morning for our final outing to plan the garden tours for the 2017 State MG Conference since rain was forecast and the skies were dark and ominous. We all had our rain gear as we gathered and carpooled out to our first stop.  We felt a few sprinkles and that was it–the sun came out and we had a glorious tour of 5 gardens.  It really never even got hot until the last leg of the last stop.  For a July day, we really got lucky.  But tonight has been another story.  The wind started whipping and the sirens were going off around 6 p.m.  Power is still off in our neighborhood, but we have a whole house generator, so we are in good shape. That was one of the best things we ever invested in! We lose power a LOT in our neighborhood, and our section always is one of the last to get power.  Trees are down all over town and my yard is covered in branches. I will have to take full inventory in the morning.  I hope everyone is safe and made it through the storm in good shape.

So after this storm, I think our tour committee was doubly blessed.  We saw the gardens in great shape and they were all outstanding and this is July!  We saw some really nice plant collections, cestrum yellow jasmine.july161 fatsia variegated.july162 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.02 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.07 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.23 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.32 tiger lily july16eclectic art,  pulaski county garden tour planning july16.13 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.14 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.16 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.17 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.18 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.20 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.24 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.35elaborate rock work pulaski county garden tour planning july16.50 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.52 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.53and amazing gardens.pulaski county garden tour planning july16.03 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.10 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.31 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.37 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.43

I found a good use for the ironing board I never use–I could make a trellis!pulaski county garden tour planning july16.21 and this “rug” is made from old garden hoses. garden hose art july161

We saw some huge hardy hibiscus, hardy hibiscus july16114 and what made it even more unusual is that it had a solitary stem.  We saw a lot of the seed stalks from arum in many of the gardens, arum berries july16 But it wasn’t just ornamental gardens, we saw some elaborate vegetable gardens too. veg garden don armstrong.july161 veg garden don armstrong.july162 vegetables july161

The thing I was most impressed with was a zip line in a garden.  The owner doesn’t use it to move himself around the garden, but he does use it to move mulch, rocks and more from his front yard to his back!  I think I need one! I have to see it in use sometime. pulaski county garden tour planning july16.61 pulaski county garden tour planning july16.51

This afternoon I finished up my power points and handouts for next weeks invasive plant workshop.  We have a sold-out crowd and a waiting list.  We may need to redo this topic again.

I also need to post a correction. I said the deadline for business cards is July 15 when it is really AUGUST 15.  Sorry for he confusion, but at least I know you are reading the blog!mg business card sample

Janet, I am with the group of Master Gardener trainees that will be completing certification this Saturday 7/16. Since the deadline for the business cards is actually August would we be able to obtain these? If so how much are they/how do we order? or would we need to be waiting until the following year after competing the 40 hours of service? Thank you! Love following your work you are really very inspirational! -Krissy Waters
