Iford Manor and Great Chalfied Manor and Garden; Wells

September 3, 2016

What a day, and even in spite of the rain we had a delightful day! Our first stop was Iford Manor with the Peto Garden. Privately owned, we met the owners. Mother Elizabeth has just passed the reigns to son William. The 2.5 acre hillside garden was designed by Harold Peto with a strong Italian influence. Statues and vistas, along with topiary pruning abounded. My internet speed is really slow tonight, so sending a pictures is a problem. I have uploaded some to facebook (janet carson)

We saw great terraced gardens, whimsical topiaries and some unusual plant specimens.

They served us THE best shortbread with tea. We then went to tour Elizabeths private garden with even more whimsy including a sheared table, sofa and teapot.

We left in our first taste of light rain. We arrived at Great Chalfield Manor to be greeted by the owners Robert & Patsy Floyd. After an excellent lunch which she prepared, we had a garden tour by Patsy. It was raining the hardest we have seen, but it did not slow us down. We saw lovely gardens, learned the history of the site and could not have had more gracious hosts. We arrived back at the hotel in time to explore the town on our own. There is a fabulous Wells Cathedral and a quaint downtown with beautiful planters.

Tomorrow we leave Wells for Cornwall.
